South Whitley, Indiana

South Whitley is a welcoming community located in southern part of Whitley County.  It was originally platted along the banks of the Eel River by Joseph Parrett 1837 and is the oldest town in Whitley County.

Points of Interest:

·         The South Whitley Public Library, located at 201 East Front Street, is a wonderful community resource.  Indeed, the signs at all entrances to the community invite travelers to “Visit Our Library.”  The Library, recently expanded and beautifully renovated, has a wide range of materials available in various formats, public computers, and free wireless access along with educational, cultural, and entertaining programming for all ages.  The Storytime Tree, Schultz Gem Collection, and the Local History and Genealogy Area are unique and popular features.  Two meeting rooms with audio/visual equipment and kitchen access are available for use.

Find more information about the library and its collection at www.swhitley.lib.in.us .

·         The town has two parks. South Whitley Community Park is located across the street from the library and behind the police department and town clerk’s office on Front Street.  It offers tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and a covered pavilion. Canoeing enthusiasts may use the launch site at the park, and the gazebo is the site of summer music concerts. The Community Room is available for rent by calling the Town Clerk’s office.

Hagan Park is located at the end of Buckeye Street.  This woodsy retreat offers a playground, pavilion, restroom facilities, and hiking trails.
